There are few destinations than can boast of being so welcoming and perfect for all types of travellers. Braga is one of those destinations, where it is easy to fall in love with its streets.
As one of the oldest cities in Portugal, Braga dates back to the Roman occupation of the Iberian Peninsula and was founded in 16 BC. And it is precisely in cultural richness and diversity that Braga stands out the most. With an aura that invites you to discover its buildings, the city has a unique historical weight in the history of Portugal, namely as a point of reference for the clergy over the centuries.
This is why today it is known for the abundance of buildings of a religious nature, from churches to convents, to the famous Sé de Braga (the Cathedral), the oldest in the country. Equally important is the Bom Jesus do Monte Sanctuary, also known as Bom Jesus de Braga. It is considered one of the most beautiful centres of devotion and pilgrimage in Portugal, and is characterised by its church dedicated to Bom Jesus, as well as its stone staircase, full of fountains, gardens and important symbolism.
In addition to the vast religious heritage, we highlight its historic centre, one of the main landmarks of the Baroque style in Europe, full of alleys and cobbled streets that make up a unique history starting with the Roman Empire, straight through to the most striking features of the medieval period, and culminating in current times.
But Braga is also a young and culturally dynamic city. The great heritage from the past continues to this day, allowing the city to stand out in areas such as scientific research or sports.
